Open shelving in the kitchen is a trend that’s here to stay and is something I have so much fun with in my own home. Not only does it create an airy, open feel, but it also provides a great opportunity to showcase your personal style. However, styling open shelves can be tricky—you want them to look chic and intentional without appearing cluttered or chaotic. Here are some tips to help you achieve that perfect balance.
1. Start with a Clean Slate
Before styling, take everything off your shelves and give them a good wipe-down. This allows you to start fresh and mindfully select items that will enhance your kitchen’s look and functionality.
It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I try to do this seasonally.
2. Choose a Cohesive Color Palette
To keep your shelves looking curated, stick to a consistent color scheme. Neutral tones with pops of color work well, as do natural materials like wood, ceramic, and glass. Consider using a mix of whites, blacks, or earthy tones to create a harmonious feel. And then try adding pops of color where it makes sense.
3. Mix Practical & Decorative Items
Balance function with aesthetics by incorporating both everyday kitchen essentials and decorative pieces. Some items to consider include:
- Dinnerware & Glassware: Stack plates and bowls neatly or line up glassware for a clean, polished look.
- Recipe Books: Arrange a few bar recipe and cookbooks vertically or stack them horizontally to add height variation.

- Storage Jars: Use glass or ceramic jars for dry goods like pasta, grains, and coffee beans.
- Plants & Greenery: Small potted plants or fresh herbs add a touch of life and freshness.
- Decor Accents: Wooden cutting boards, candles, framed art, or decorative bowls create visual interest.
4. Layer & Vary Heights
Layering is key to making open shelves look styled rather than cluttered. Play with different heights by stacking plates, propping up cutting boards, and placing taller items at the back with smaller ones in front. This adds depth and dimension to your display.
5. Use Baskets & Containers
Baskets and or little glass containers help contain smaller items and keep everything organized. Woven baskets, wire baskets, or stylish containers can hold napkins, spices, or miscellaneous kitchen tools while maintaining a streamlined look.
6. Stick to the ‘Rule of Thirds’
The rule of thirds is a simple yet effective design principle. Arrange items in groups of three or odd numbers to create a visually pleasing arrangement. This helps break up symmetry and makes the display feel more organic.
7. Rotate Seasonally
Switching out decor seasonally keeps your shelves fresh and exciting. In spring and summer, incorporate bright ceramics and fresh flowers. In fall and winter, swap in warm-toned accents like wood, copper, or seasonal greenery.
8. Edit & Avoid Overcrowding
Less is often more when it comes to open shelving. Step back and assess your arrangement, removing anything that feels unnecessary or cluttered. Leave some negative space to allow each piece to stand out.
9. Incorporate Personal Touches
Make your shelves feel like home by adding personal elements such as a family heirloom, a piece of artwork, or a cherished souvenir. These touches add character and make the space feel uniquely yours.
10. Maintain Regularly
Open shelves require a bit more upkeep than closed cabinets. Wipe them down regularly to prevent dust buildup, and do a quick refresh every few months to keep them looking stylish and functional.
With these tips, you can create beautifully styled open shelves that are both practical and visually appealing. Whether you prefer a minimalist, farmhouse, or modern aesthetic, these guidelines will help you achieve a stunning kitchen display that enhances your space and suits your lifestyle.
