There are certain home maintenance tasks that you should not let yourself get behind on. It’s true to say that this is easier said than done when there are so many that need to be completed, but we promise you that it’s going to be worth every single second that you spend doing them. They might not seem as though they need to be done regularly, and you might ask yourself what the worst that could happen is if you skip a day, but you don’t really want to find out. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the home maintenance tasks that you should never allow yourself to get behind in, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.
Clearing Out Gutters
First on the list we’re going to be looking at cleaning up the gutters. We know that this is a gross job to do, but it’s an important one if you do not want to end up with dampness in the walls or pools of water on your roof. The latter might not seem like a problem, but homes have gutters for a reason.
You need to get your ladder out, get up there, and get them cleared out. It’s most helpful if you either put a glove in, reach inside and then pull all of the debris and leaves out yourself, putting them into a waste bag. Or, if you don’t want to do that, then you can get a pole or a scraper to scrape it all out.
If you are really that against doing this yourself, there are services that you can hire to come and take care of this for you. They will clear out your gutters and then take the mess away, making your life ten times easier.
Cleaning Dryer Vents
This is something that a lot of people forget about as it’s not something that is directly in your face. However, you should be cleaning out your dryer vents regularly to avoid any kind of build up that you can do without. Again, it’s not the most pleasant job, and the longer that you leave this for, the more unpleasant it is going to be for you. It’s pretty simple to do though, so it should not take too long to get them sorted once you start.
If for whatever reason you cannot do this on the designated day that you have, make sure that you are doing it as soon as you can after that. In fact, do it earlier than normal if you don’t have time, just to avoid any potential problems.
Maintaining The Garden
The garden is somewhere that a lot of people forget about unless the sun is shining and they want to get out there. We can understand why, but you are not helping your garden by doing this. You need to get out there, make sure that you are doing basic maintenance regularly, and keeping the space looking nice. It might even be worth investing in something like a worx leaf blower to make your life a little easier during the fall and the winter months when they are everywhere. Leaves cannot be allowed to disintegrate into your mud, as it makes an unpleasant combination for your garden,
Ensure that you are keeping the grass cut nicely, get the weeds out as they appear, water your flowers, and generally take care of your outdoor space. It doesn’t have to take ages, as long as you stay on top of it.
Cleaning Hard To Reach Areas
There are going to be hard to reach areas in your home, but this does not mean that they do not need to be cleaned like everything else. In fact, we would argue that they are more important as they get cleaned less often and will likely be dirtier than other places. For example, you need to be pulling your oven out and cleaning behind it if it is freestanding and not built in. Or, if there are any gaps anywhere in your home, get a sponge that will be able to fit down the gap and make it clean. Ensure that you are drying it thoroughly as well as the last thing that you need is mold growing in there.
Problems With The Roof
The roof is one of the most important parts of the home, and you can’t afford to have a problem with it, especially one that could have been avoided. Ideally, you will be checking your roof once a month or so, detecting any loose shingles or any vulnerabilities in it. If there is a problem that you can spot, you can either take care of it yourself, or you can hire a roofer to do this for you. The more the damage spreads and worsens, the more of a pain it’s going to be to fix. It will take longer, and more money, which you don’t want to have to deal with. Just keep an eye on it, it’s not that hard.
Testing Smoke Detectors
The last quick point that we’re going to make is that you should be testing your smoke detectors to ensure that they are working. Again, so this once per month just to ensure that they have not given up, and you will know that you are safe and will be alerted if there is smoke in your home.
They might not seem important at the time, and you might not think that missing them off of your chore list is going to be too much of an issue, but we promise that you will thank yourself for getting out of this line of thought. There are too many problems that can occur when you get behind on these maintenance tasks, and none of them are anything that you will be keen to experience. Just make sure that you are thorough in these tasks when you complete them, and don’t leave it too long before you complete it next. We wish you the very best of luck with these tasks!
