Keeping your dignity as you get older is something that all of us would like to maintain. As we get older, it can be harder to manage life in general, especially as your body and mind isn’t what it used to be.

Stay active both in physical and mental wellbeing
Keeping hold of your dignity is possible, even when you’re in your nineties. A lot of the time, it’s having a good mindset when it comes to your mental and physical well-being.
It’s good to keep both of these active because they both complement one another. If you’re neglecting one, then chances are, the other one is going to follow suit eventually.
Try to stay active and do as much as possible with the time you have available. Staying physically active can get a little harder as you get older and even the fittest elderly individuals cannot do the same things they once were able to do as teens or young adults.
The same goes for your mental health, make sure you’re practicing mindfulness and looking after your mental wellbeing with outlets and social experiences that bring you joy.
Take safety precautions and be mindful of your age
As mentioned above, even when you’re sprightly and you have a lot fo energy for your age, that doesn’t mean you can do backflips or go cliff diving every other day.
While you might want to attempt to do some things in life that others might consider you to be ‘a little bit too old for’ you should be mindful of how much your body can take. Often enough, your mind might be telling you that you can do something that your body is just too old for.
Taking safety precautions is the next best thing if you’re not wanting to slow down or stop anything you would usually do when you were younger. As long as you’re being as safe as possible and mindful of your limitations, then you should continue doing what you love. Just be careful!
Eat well and exercise regularly
Nourishing your body with plenty of exercise and good food is just as important as it was back when you were young. You need to ramp up anything that has any of the nutrients that your body has lacked as it gets older. Introducing this through more specific foods or supplements is a great way to give your body all of the things it needs to keep thriving.
While it’s good to eat healthy, you should let yourself be restricted from foods that also are an indulgence and that you love a lot. Again, it’s all about moderation and getting the balance right.
Exercise should also be something you embrace as much as possible. While it can be a lot more challenging to exercise as you get older, if you’re doing exercise you enjoy, then it’s not going to feel like exercise at all.
For example, if you love dancing, then this is a great calorie burner and some dancing types can be a really boost to body muscle and joint strength.
Keep well connected with friends and family
We all need socialization, even if you consider yourself to be highly introverted. As you get older, the people that were around you, like your parents, siblings, friends, etc. will start to drop off.
It therefore leaves you most of the time alone. That’s why it’s important to continue nurturing friendships, building new relationships, and staying in touch with your younger friends and family. This is all-important to get that socialization in on a daily or weekly basis.
It’s often the same situation where the elderly are left to their own devices and until they go into care, they might be isolated from society. Therefore, it should be something you’re proactive about and doing as much to keep your social life healthy.
Get plenty of sleep
Sleep is a key player in your bodily health and something that you need to get plenty of as you get older. While it might feel counter-productive because you want to make the most of your time while you still have it, you should look to get as much sleep as you can.
Around seven to nine hours is something that you should aim to get every night. This is an appropriate amount of time that will help repair and reenergize your body for the following day.
If you’re not getting enough sleep, then boy are you going to feel it. It’s something that you’ll notice both physically and mentally, so make sure you’re getting as much sleep as you can get.
Look for in-home care services
In-home care for seniors is a great service that is worth taking full advantage of when you’re not quite ready to give up your independence or your home.
There are a lot of elderly folks out there who would do just fine in their own homes if they had a bit of assistance every now and then. In-home care can be great for those who want to continue keeping their independence and dignity for as long as physically and mentally possible.
