It’s the end of a long day and you stare in front of the bathroom mirror. The temptation to brush your teeth, splash your face with cold water and call it a night is a lot to resist. However, a whole day of activity means your skin needs a bit of nourishment.
Whether you’ve worn makeup, you’ve commuted into work, or lazed about at home, there’s a lot of dirt that builds up on the face and body. That means you need to get clean and provide your skin with some much-needed hydration. If you’re someone who doesn’t spend that long doing skincare in the evening, then you’re missing out.
Just a few simple steps to add to your nighttime routine can make a big difference in how your skin feels and looks. Here are a few tips on how to look after your skin at the end of the day.
Double cleanse to remove all makeup and dirt
Start off by double cleansing. This is the best way of removing all the makeup and dirt that’s sitting on your skin. For your body, make sure to shower and remove all that daily dirt and grime with a body soap or shower gel.
With a double cleanse, it’s doing what it says on the tin. It’s cleansing your skin twice. That first cleanse is going to remove the majority and the second is going to go in again for the rest. Ideally, if you have one oil cleanser and one foam or gel option, that will certainly help.
There’s a lot of stubborn dirt or makeup that clings onto the skin and it’s important to remove all of it before you go onto the rest of your skincare routine.
Avoid using hot water
Hot water is the enemy when it comes to the skin because it can quickly dry it out. Despite how much you may enjoy a hot bath or shower in the evenings to wind down for bed, try to avoid scorching your skin in this way.
Even turning down the temperature slightly on your baths and showers, will make a difference to the health of your skin. If you do take a hot bath or shower, limit your time and get out sooner rather than later. Stewing in hot water isn’t great for your skin in the long run.
Don’t use makeup wipes
Makeup wipes are something you should only use in emergency situations. Yes, you heard it. With makeup wipes, they do very little to remove all of the makeup successfully and when it comes to makeup wipes, you’re dragging them across your skin.
Dragging your skin is a big no-no, especially as it can speed up the signs of aging. Not only that but by dragging your skin, you’re likely to irritate it. Irritation can lead to sore skin and inflammation. Of course, that’s not something you want just before you’re heading to bed.
Apply a hydrating overnight cream
To help your skin rejuvenate and recover overnight, a good overnight cream is worth investing in. What could be better than having a skincare product that works its magic overnight? It means no effort on your part other than to apply it before bed. The rest is done overnight when you’re fast asleep dreaming of a tropical vacation spot for the summer. If you use another skin treatment such as hocl spray, make sure to only use neutral creams and miss the areas you’ve applied such products to.
Try out retinoids for anti-aging benefits
If you’re wanting to help your skin feel more youthful and prevent the signs of aging for longer, then try out retinoids. These and peptides, are the only products you can get over the counter which are powerful enough to make a difference to your appearance.
Sleep in silk to protect your skin further
There are often issues with your skin that can happen when you’re sleeping. For example, your bedding might be made out of materials that are causing you irritation. One of the common causes of itchy skin at night is likely down to what you’re sleeping in.
If you’re someone who wants to protect their skin, especially when it comes to keeping the skin youthful, silk sheets are the way forward. If you think silk bed sheets are too much, then start with silk pillows. Silk pillows are great for avoiding any irritation with the skin and when it comes to your face, it helps to not pull your skin.
Looking after your skin is important, especially from a young age. Take an extra ten to fifteen minutes in the evening with a good skincare routine to give your skin what it needs.
