It’s such a sad thing watching our pets age. Of course, aging is inevitable, but when it’s our beloved fur babies, it’s just heartbreaking to watch.
My boxer, Laila, is nine years old and has gotten pretty frail. Everything I read says she needs glucosamine for her joints and other good supplements to keep her as healthy as possible, but she’s just so picky. It’s been so hard to find supplements she’ll actually eat.
I’ve partnered with some amazing brands to share our product recommendations for senior dogs that will hopefully help you with your aging fur babies. I’ve also added some tips for picky eaters that may help you out, as well.
Treatibles Extra Strength Soft CBD Chewables
Laila is a super anxious dog. She’s always had separation anxiety to the point of getting a messed up tummy when we leave her for just a few hours. She won’t eat when we’re gone and gets a grumbly tummy just like a nervous human.
We’ve tried various CBD anxiety products for dogs, but she’s seriously so picky. We have a pantry full of products she won’t take, but by some miracle, she likes Treatibles chews which contain 7 mg of organic full spectrum hemp CBD extract per treat.
Another bonus is Treatibles CBD chewables for dogs are meant to help with more than just anxiety. They help with digestive issues and discomfort, as well.
Tip: If your dog has anxiety and won’t eat whole Treatibles, try cutting them up into tiny pieces and sneaking them into their food.
And if your furry feline baby has anxiety or you’re taking her on a road trip, you can check out the Treatibles CBD chewables for cats.

Vet’s Best Pet Ear Relief + Oral Care Products
Dog Ear Cleaner
We’ve been lucky enough to only have dealt with one ear infection with Laila in her 9 years. We do deal with a lot of waxy buildup inside her ear creases, though, so we’re loving the Vet’s Best Ear Relief Finger Wipes. I have even used them on the cat’s ears.
These doggy ear wipes are made with Witch Hazel, Aloe, and Tea Tree Oil (which gives them a great scent). They are also free of parabens and are easily accessible thanks to their package design.
Dog Dental Care
Oral care is not something we ever focused on with Laila, unfortunately. We recently found a tooth covered in plaque and the vet recommended we give her rough things to chew on to chip away the tartar, and brush what teeth she has left to keep them as healthy as possible.
Vet’s Best has an awesome toothbrush specifically designed for dogs that works well with their enzymatic toothpaste gel. We still have to hold Laila down to get inside her mouth, but she doesn’t hate the taste of Vet’s Best toothpaste which is a bonus for us.
The toothpaste is made with various extracts and oils including neem oil, aloe, grapefruit seed extract, and more. Unfortunately, I think Laila’s breath is too far gone, but I’m hoping the Vet’s Best toothpaste continues to curb the smell slightly (thanks to the baking soda it contains).
Nutri Vet Pre and Probiotic Soft Chews
I’ve talked so much about probiotics for humans, but Nutri-Vet knows the importance of pre & probiotics for dogs. I honestly never considered probiotics for Laila, but after reading up them, I’m kicking myself for not giving them to her sooner.
Probiotics for dogs help support a health gut and digestion. And better gut health equals a better immune system thanks to the naturally occurring micro organisms they contain.
The Nutri-Vet dog probiotics taste like cheese and liver and Laila absolute loves them. She gets three of these chews per day and comes running when she hears the cup shake.
Nutri Vet Hip & Joint Biscuits for Dogs
A more obvious must-have for senior dogs is glucosamine for hip and joint health. Nutri-Vet’s hip and join biscuits contain 500 mg of glucosamine per biscuit which helps maintain your dog’s cartilage.
Glucosamine is super important for your dog’s joints, which we’ve noticed have gotten very sore and crackly for Laila. I’m hoping that prolonged glucosamine use will help improve this for her. It’s been so sad to watch her have to stretch after she gets up from a nap.
Simple Solution Extreme Pet Stain + Odor Remover
If you have a senior dog, they may be experiencing incontinence. You’ll need to have some pet stain and odor remover on-hand to easily clean up inevitable messes.
My Laila starting having issues with urinating in her sleep within the last year and we’ve had so many messes to clean up. She’s also randomly started vomiting on my rugs when she overeats, which has not been fun to deal with.
I learned a great cleaning hack for getting these stains up, though:
Tip for Cleaning Pet Stains:
- Immediately clean up any solids from the pet mess and wipe up any liquids that you can.
- Pour sparkling water (literally any brand works) over the stain and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Dab up (don’t rub).
- After you dab up the sparkling water, spritz with a stain remover product like Simple Solution Extreme Pet Stain & Odor Remover.
- Continue dabbing up any heavy liquids from the stain and allow to dry for 24 hours.
- If you are still noticing a stain, you can repeat the process.
We recently moved from CA to TN and are still getting used to the red dirt paw prints being tracked throughout the house. I keep a cheaper rug at the back door to somewhat clean Laila’s paws as she comes in from outside, but our dining table rug has perfect red paw prints tracked all over it. Needless to say, Simple Solution has a permanent home on top of my kitchen counter.
An aging pet is sad to deal with, but inevitable. Having the right supplements and products on hand can make the process a little bit easier on everyone. Hopefully you learned something new today and get a chance to try out some of these products.
