Your mailbox, if you have your own, is the first impression that a lot of people get when it comes to your home. After all, it’s the closest thing to people as they pass by. A fun, unique, and engaging mailbox is a great way to express your personality, make your home stand out, and give your house some improved curb appeal.
But, where do you start?
If you want to design mailboxes like the ones seen here but you don’t have much experience in this field, there are many ways to kickstart your imagination and get those creative juices flowing.
Here are some tips for designing a creative mailbox!
1. Choose a Color Palette
First things first, you need to think about the color palette for your mailbox. Are you going to go for traditional colors like black and white, or are you going to push the boat out and try some bright vibrant colors that really stand out?
The color wheel is your oyster!
Of course, too many bright colors can look tacky, but a couple of nice pastels could be a great way to liven up your mailbox without making it feel loud and over-the-top. You could also go with the classic black and white farmhouse look.
2. Look at Different Mailbox Styles
Though you might suspect that all mailbox shapes are similar, they actually come in dozens of different styles which emulate different eras of history and different parts of the country. For example, you might want a strong, sturdy cast-iron aluminum mailbox, or you might prefer a slightly more ornate-looking Gaines Classic Mailbox.
Whether you want a Streetscape Mailbox or an Elephant Trunk Parcel Box, there are many different styles of mailbox to choose from. You might want to create a totally unique shape for your mailbox, which is fine, but it helps to draw inspiration from what’s already out there.
3. Get on Pinterest!
Pinterest is just so full of good ideas for creative little projects and hobbies like this. Browsing Pinterest for DIY mailboxes, you’ll find all sorts of unique and crazy designs that can serve as inspiration.
With a quick browse of mailboxes on Pinterest, I can easily find mailboxes designed to look like ladybugs, beer kegs, arrangements of flowers, and much more.
Get inspired by other creatives!
4. Decide who’s going to build it
If you’re naturally quite handy, then you might want to build the creative mailbox yourself. However, if you’re not brilliant with tools, you might want to find someone who can help you make your vision come to life.
We’re not all naturally gifted craftspeople, so speak to people who are.
Of course, depending on the design, you might be taking a basic mailbox and painting it or otherwise adapting it to your creative vision, so not everyone will need a ton of help. It all depends on your vision!
5. Don’t forget about security!
It’s all well and good having a penguin for a mailbox, but if the security features are lacking, then it stops being a practical piece of equipment and it just becomes a decoration for your home.
Although we’re being creative and designing fun, colorful things here, it’s also useful to remember that your mailbox needs to function as a mailbox! Make sure that the construction of your mailbox is strong, sturdy, and able to withstand the weather.
If you have security and privacy concerns, you might also want to consider fitting locks to your mailbox or going for a dropbox-style design.
Hopefully these tips can help you to design a creative mailbox that works for your home. Remember to be fun and creative but never sacrifice security and practicality. Have fun!
