So, you’ve got a few bad habits that are in need of some spring cleaning. I am all about changing things that don’t work, so let’s see how we can shift your mindset to break those bad thinking habits.
No. 1 – Ditch the Negative Nancys
They say that you are who you hang around with. And I say it’s time to analyze your friend circle (even if that includes family members).
If you always surround yourself with pessimistic people who aren’t really ever encouraging you to do better in life, you probably aren’t going to be able to pull yourself away from your negative lifecycle.
You will level-up your mindset shifts with the right community. That’s because when you’re around other people that are working on the same goals as you your mind focuses on what’s possible instead of feeling doomed by doing things alone.
“A mindset reset makes all the difference and then the rest will follow,” says Dr. Wayne Pernell, breakthrough coach, relationship expert, international speaker, and Amazon bestselling author.
Whether it’s weight loss, physical activity, relaxation, or leadership, get around other people who are better at it than you are and can pave the way.
We have a weekly neighbor night where we talk business goals, how we can do better at life, and highs and lows of the week. If you do something like this on a Sunday, you wake up fresh and ready to tackle the week with new goals and a clear mindset.
No. 2 – Do Something Productive… Right Now!
Have you been putting off cleaning out your closet?
Do you have a pile of mail sitting on your kitchen table that really just needs to be sorted through and mostly thrown away?
Are there weeds growing in the corner of your backyard that you’ve been saying you’ll get to some day?
Choose ONE thing that has been bugging you this week, today, or even this month, and do it. Just freaking do it!
Pick something small. Go for a big project. Just do something that you can feel proud of and that will get one thing off of your plate.
No. 3 – Compliment Someone
If you’ve been feeling bad about yourself, try giving someone else a compliment.
Complimenting someone else can surprisingly bring your spirits up and can usually result in a compliment right back ‘atcha!
If you genuinely love your co-worker’s shoes, but just haven’t told her… tell her!
If you saw a photo of your friend’s new haircut on social media but just scrolled on by, stop and leave her a comment telling her how much you like it.
No. 4 – Write Out What You Have Accomplished So Far This Year
If you set huge goals and haven’t yet achieved them this year, no worries.
What did you get done this week? Did you fold 8,000 baskets of laundry? Did you make dinner every single night last week? Did you babysit your nephew AND still manage to make it to read in your children’s classroom?
Write it down and pat yourself on the back! You’re doing great!
No 5. – Have a Firm Grasp on Your Likes/Dislikes
Knowing your opinions on certain topics can make you feel so empowered and confident, especially in social situations. Do you research on the latest trending news headlines and know where you stand on political issues.
Don’t be afraid to speak about how you feel, but do so with facts and confidence.
No. 6 – Give Yourself 5 Minutes Every Day to Write Down Negative Thoughts
Sometimes we just need to take 5 minutes to get all that negative s*it out of our heads.
This is not something I need to do very often, but if you find yourself being angry at the people driving on the road during your commute, or the slow walkers shopping in front of you at Target, take a few minutes to write it out.
Set a timer on your phone, Google Home, Alexa, whatever you have… but give yourself a designated time to write it out, review it, and let it go.
No. 7 – Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
Do you have an overwhelming week ahead? Give yourself something to look forward to so you have a “light at the end of the tunnel” feeling.
This can be a coffee date with a friend, a movie to yourself after the family goes to bed, playing your favorite mahjong game in the car after work before heading indoors, or even ordering in one night for dinner. Have it in mind before you enter the week and reward yourself.
No 8. – Stop. Breath. Repeat.
No, really.
Stop.
Breath.
Repeat.
(and do it often)
No 9. – Take a News + Social Media Break
One of the biggest Debbie Downers lately is the news. The news makes money by reporting bad news. The world will still continue turning if you give yourself a weeklong news break.
Social media can also be a HUGE negative for self esteem. Delete social media apps from your phone and literally take a freaking break. Take notice of what mindset and productivity changes happen during this break.
No. 10 – Buy Something Nice for Yourself
I’m not talking a Chanel bag or a new car (unless you’ve got that kinda money, honey).
I’m talking a cake pop, a chai latte, a new shirt, or even something as simple as a new air freshener for the house.
Chances are that the feeling of buying something for yourself that you really wanted will make you feel so good.
I hope my tips help you reset and recharge your mindset. If you have anything else to add or have tried any of my tips, share your thoughts!
