A Better Alternative
As the coffee industry really started to expand, around 40 years ago, farmers were paid on a per-pound basis regardless of the quality of their coffee. In order to increase yield and productivity, the farmers used a practice of clear-cutting areas of rain forest to make way for an easier, cheaper method of growing coffee in the sun. The farmers experienced a short-term gain with this approach, but once the ground became exposed to the sun, it became infertile after just a few years.
Coffee plants thrive under the canopy of trees in the rain forest, so by helping preserve the existing forest and planting more trees, coffee farmers are not only working, but they are providing a habitat for the other plants and animals that rely on the ecosystem.
