First of all, let me begin by mentioning that I am not a pet care expert, but I have learned quite a bit throughout the seven years of raising my boxer, Laila. We’re reaching the point in Laila’s life where she requires different types of activity to keep her healthy and has different dietary needs than when she was a young, spunky little thing. So I wanted to share some tips that I’ve learned from a few different sources.
Throughout the years, I have learned what Laila can tolerate, as far as food goes, and what she can’t. A recent check-up at the local Vet. clinic revealed that Laila not only had an ear infection that accounted for the fact that she couldn’t hear us when we called for her, but that she is super sensitive to grains and chicken products (eggs included). My Vet advised me to choose a food that contains only a single protein instead of the turkey and venison we had been feeding her. He also mentioned that older dogs tend to not tolerate grains as well as younger dogs, hinting that we may want to go grain-free with Laila’s food.
On a recent trip to PetSmart, I admittedly was a little overwhelmed in the Purina® Pro Plan® aisle. Purina is a brand that we have fed our pets for the last three years, so it was a natural choice when deciding to choose a new senior dog formula for Laila. They have lots of new formulations to choose from, including their new grain-free options and Savor collection. And since I was analyzing Laila’s food, I decided to reevaluate what we were feeding our cat, too.
Purina Pro Plan provides nutrition that performs in a variety of wet and dry products formulated for taste preferences, age, dietary considerations or activity/lifestyle in four platforms for dogs and four platforms for cats. Backed by a team of over 400 Purina scientists, including nutritionists, behaviorists and veterinarians, each of their platforms offers outstanding nutrition.
Our cat, Winnie, just turned two and should be eating a food meant for adult cats. We chose the Purina Pro Plan’s Savor Salmon and Rice Formula for her, since Salmon is the #1 ingredient in the food. It also contains prebiotic fiber to help promote digestive health and omega fatty acids for healthy skin and coat.
Purina Pro Plan knows that every pet is unique, so I appreciate having many varieties to choose from at PetSmart. We had a bit of trouble staying on task in the store, naturally, because the store is like a mini zoo. My girls had so much fun looking at the reptiles, fish, kittens up for adoption and rodents running on their spinning wheels. The staff was super friendly and happily pointed us to the aisle we eventually needed to end up on where I was able to find all of the Purina Pro Plan varieties.
7 = 47 in Human Years
I was playing around on the Purina Pro Plan University website and learned that around the age of 7, a dog’s glucose metabolism in the brain begins to change, which can affect things like memory, learning, awareness or decision-making. I had no idea! But Purina® Pro Plan® Bright Mind® Adult 7+ can fuel Laila’s brain, helping her think more like she did when she was younger. So, the food decision was a no-brainer.
We went with the Bright Mind Turkey and Rice formula, since it was closer to what she was used to eating. It contains no corn, wheat or soy, turkey is the first ingredient, it helps support joint health and mobility, plus is great for skin and coat nourishment.
