We all want our homes to be comfortable and stylish. Even better when we can make our home an extension of what we love, and it can reflect our personality. The scandi-style of decorating was a big hit last year, leading to lots of monochrome and quite a minimalist style. The look was pretty modern, but there are more ways that you can modernize your home, yet still, keep it looking cozy. If you fancy making some changes to your home, then there is no time like the present. Having an ultra modern looking home isn’t for everyone. But if you think that modern is your style, and you’re not too sure about minimalism, then here are some design ideas for you. Would love to hear what you think.
Have a Focal Point
When a room has a focal point, somewhere that your eyes focus when you walk into the room, then it can help you to create a modern but cozy look. If the focal point is ultra modern, then the rest of the room can be pretty neutral. If you see a modern pendant light fixture above a stylish dining table, you know that that room is pretty modern looking. The rest of the decor will just be there to complement it, rather than take over. So getting some focal accessories can be a good way to create a modern look. In other rooms, it could be a modern piece of artwork or a sculpture. It could be a funky piece of furniture or a mirror. Just focus on getting something really eye-catching, as it can be a bit of a way to cheat your way to a modern look.
Choose Water Not Greenery
In most homes, it can be more of a traditional look to go for some flowers, plants or greenery in the home. They can look really good, and they do add some real color and brightness to the room. However, they are more of a traditional look. Your home is never going to look ultra modern when it is filled with traditional house plants. I think that succulents are much more modern look at the moment, but on the whole, you could try something completely different. You could choose to have some indoor water fountains in the corners of rooms in the home, for example. They are super modern and can look really funky. They are definitely a talking point, so if you love to entertain, then why not choose something a little different to houseplants?
Buy a Rug
Rugs can be really important pieces in a room. They have the magic of being able to pull together quite a few features in a room. So it is certainly worth looking at. Naturally, they will only look best on a room that has wooden flooring. So bear that in mind if you already have a lot of carpet. You could even choose that as your focal point in a living room or hallway, for example. Plush wool or shagpile rugs are luxurious and modern but give off some cozy vibes too.
Stay Organized
A room will never look modern when it is full of clutter. So that is an important consideration when it comes to decorating and styling your home. I’m not talking about complete minimalism, as that is pretty hard for most people to achieve. What I mean is just making sure you have enough storage for everything in the room. It could be some funky shelving or adding some cool bookends to a bookcase. It could be using things like a coffee table or a sideboard. You just don’t want to have too much out on ‘display’ if you want to achieve a modern look. If there isn’t room in that room, then does it belong elsewhere? Removing unnecessary items can be a good way to have a clear out, as well as help you to decide what is important to have in the room or not. Then you’ll have a clean and organized slate to start with in each room.
Create a Feature Wall
Having a feature wall has been around for a while. It could be that you have one wall a different color to the rest of the room. It could be that you have a photo wall or a wall filled with framed posters or art. It could also mean something more modern like a chalkboard wall, where you can draw, doodle or create fonts to your heart’s content. But an ultra modern way of ‘doing’ a feature wall could be something that uses completely different textures to the rest of the room. How about having a textured feature wall with a rug being put up on the wall? You could also create a feature wall using tiles, or even glass. A large wall that goes through to another room could be replaced with a large fish tank, for example. Such a modern and creative way of decorating (plus, you get the mesmerizing element of having a large fish tank in not only one but two rooms).
Right Placement of Furniture
In most living areas, the sofa is placed right by a window. But in reality, you want it to be away from there. Letting in as much natural light as possible is really key when it comes to your home and creating a cozy and modern look. So avoid placing furniture right by or blocking windows. Obviously, there is sometimes no choice in the matter as it will depend on the size and shape of the room. But think about placing furniture in statement places. You can create your own walls with furniture if needed. So if you need to divide a room up with furniture, then just do it. Your home and your rules.
I hope this has given you a few ideas for an ultra modern but cozy looking home. Have you got any plans to redecorate or change the style of your home over the summer?
