Do you struggle to lose those extra pounds? Have you been trying and failing to get the weight off for what seems like ages? Getting to a healthy weight should be as easy as eating better and moving more, but we all know that real life isn’t always like that. You probably know people who seem to be able to get rid of the fat and keep it off, and think that they have some special skills that you’re lacking. Fortunately, we know their secrets, and all you have to do is read on to find out…
1. It’s all about your mindset
You know that horrible feeling you get when starting a new diet and fitness plan, that nagging voice of self-doubt that tells you you’re never going to be one of those beautiful people? You can change that! People who lose weight successfully and keep it off don’t see their regime as one of punishment for enjoying a few cheeseburgers – instead they view the changes they are making as alterations to their lifestyle. Looking at losing weight as a way to make positive changes in your life that have lots of benefits – besides just looking good – is the key to getting it right.
2. It’s all in the planning
We all tend to reach for junk and fat or sugar laden snacks when we’re starving hungry, and skinny types are just the same as the rest of us. Planning your meals and snacks for the week might seem a bit boring and, well, like something your mum would do – but it is the easiest way to avoid being tempted to eat the wrong things. Make sure you eat regularly to stave off hunger, and pack healthy snacks to eat at work.
3. Don’t cut out whole food groups
Losing weight healthily and safely is not about starving yourself or cutting whole food groups out of your diet. Although plans that involve eliminating dairy, gluten or carbohydrates have become fashionable in recent years, they’re not necessarily very good for you. Most importantly, cutting things out completely makes your diet much more difficult to sustain – and will have you reaching for the pepperoni pizza in no time. Make small changes to your usual diet, swapping what you usually eat for healthier alternatives – and you’ll be much more successful.
4. Treats are allowed
Even the slimmest, healthiest people allow themselves to have occasional treats. You don’t have to give up on having your chocolate fix – just train yourself to eat a little less and make it a weekly rather than daily affair. If you are used to having treats every day, make the effort to find other ways to reward yourself – and it will soon become second nature to be a little more restrained.
Find out on this page how you can enjoy a bit of junk food from time to time and still burn it off. Don’t expect to transform yourself right away – if you’re doing it right, losing weight requires time and consistency. You can do it!
