For most of us, one of our very worst nightmares is our home being broken into. Having an intruder come into your home uninvited is a terrifying thought, especially as a parent. The idea that a stranger could enter your home, violating yours’ and your family’s safe haven is utterly horrifying.
As parents, our greatest fear is something bad happening to our children, and so, we try to do all that we can to keep them safe. The problem is that sometimes our homes aren’t as safe and secure as we would like to think. Sometimes, there are areas of our homes that lack effective security measures.
How can you tell if your home is secure enough to ward off intruders?
The first step to determining how secure your home is, is to look at it like an intruder would, focusing on any security weaknesses.
Walk around your property, looking for the best and easiest ways an intruder could gain entry. For example, do you have any doors or windows that aren’t kept locked at all times? Or any doors or windows with weak locks? If the answer is yes, these are areas that could allow an intruder to enter your home.
Are your security measures all effective? It doesn’t matter what security measures you have in place if they aren’t effective deterrents. Say, for instance, you have CCTV dummy cameras installed, in the hope that they will deter intruders. Any good intruder will be able to tell the difference between dummy cameras and the real deal, so these may not be as effective as you think. Or, say, for example, you have a wired security alarm in place, this isn’t as effective as you think. The reason? Because the wires can be easily cut, rendering it useless.
One of the best ways to determine how secure your home is, is by contacting a security expert. Hire a security expert to come and take a look at your home and point out any ways that an intruder could gain entry to it. By having a security expert come to your home and assess how secure it is, you will be able to understand where your home’s weaknesses lay. You could even ask them to perform a mock break-in, to test each area of your home thoroughly.
What can you do to improve how secure your property is?
Once you’ve determined where your home’s weaknesses lay, the next step is to fix them and find other ways to boost how secure your property is. This is important, as often, having adequate security measures in place is all it takes to deter intruders. Most intruders are opportunists, meaning that they look for properties that look like easy targets. Hence why the more security measure you put in place, the better.
While a wired alarm can be useful, if the wires are cut by an intruder, it’s rendered useless. So, it’s best to replace your wired alarm with a wireless one, so that there’s no way to turn it off, other than with the security code. When choosing a security alarm, pick one that connects to the police if it’s set off. As that way, you know that wherever you are, your home is protected. There are now security alarms that can be connected to your smartphone, so that wherever you are, you can monitor your home.
To make your home’s windows and doors even more secure, consider adding a roller shutter to each one. By adding a roller shutter to each entry point within your home, you can completely close them off to the outside world. Making your home even more secure. Plus, should a storm occur, you can pull your window shutters down to not only protect your home from damage, but also to keep it safe from intruders. After storms, many intruders take advantage of damaged properties and loot them of any valuables.
If you don’t already have strategically placed security lighting in place, then install it. Having motion-sensor security lighting in place around your home is a fantastic deterrent. This is because intruders look for dark areas where they can break in without anyone else noticing.
As for CCTV, if you don’t already have it, this is also something that’s worth considering investing in. It may seem expensive, but can you really put a price on your family’s safety? Not only are security cameras a great intruder deterrent, but they are also great for capturing images of intruders. Making it easier for the police to catch anyone who attempts to break into your home. Remember, when selecting security cameras, to opt for wireless ones. Because just like security alarms, the wires connecting CCTV cameras can be cut. So it’s best to pay a little more and go wireless.
Your home is yours’ and your family’s sanctuary, your escape from the world. So the idea of a stranger breaking in is utterly terrifying, especially as it can lead to you no longer feeling safe in your own home. So, it’s important to do whatever you can to protect your home and keep it as safe as possible from potential intruders.
