Pay-Per-Mile Car Insurance from Metromile
Metromile leverages data to harness the power of predictive modeling to make all aspects of driving and owning a car simpler, less expensive and more convenient. By offering a mobile app and connected devices, Metromile is reinventing how drivers can effectively manage the costs of car ownership.
My Quote from Metromile
I, personally, am always on the hunt for cheaper car insurance because I’m a low mileage driver. I drive less than 10,000 miles per year and my husband drives about half of what I drive. I’m constantly getting newsletters and emails from car insurance companies claiming they can save me hundreds of dollars per year but I’ve only found Liberty Mutual to truly do so, until I checked out Metromile. Being the bargain hunter that I am, I requested a quote from Metromile for our Nissan Pathfinder. I added just about the same coverage that we have with Liberty Mutual and Metromile quoted me $27.59 base rate (per 31 days) plus 3.8 cents per-mile. I’m currently paying about $118 per month through Liberty Mutual, so, it sounds like I’d save a ton of money with Metromile. I also got a similar quote for my husband’s vehicle.
Where is Metromile available?
Per-mile insurance through Metromile is currently available in California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Virginia and Oregon. Drivers in other states can add themselves to a wait list for an emailed notification of availability. More states are expected to be available soon.
Insurance Features
With per-mile insurance, you aren’t charged for the miles you drive above 150/day (250/day in Washington). So if you go on a long trip, you’ll save even more.
Metromile offers you complete coverage. Even though you’re paying less, you still have the same amazing coverage that all the big insurers provide. From collision to comprehensive, they’ve got you covered.
Metromile measures your total miles driven, not your driving behavior (ex. speeding or braking.)
The Metromile Tag
Metromile has unveiled the Metromile Tag, a free, wireless device for automobiles that uses Apple’s iBeacon technology to create a more informed driving experience that will help car owners save time and money.
Metromile Tag connects simply to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth, and stores conveniently in the glove box, cup holder or center console of the user’s vehicle. Tag’s proximity aspect serves to deliver useful information about driving; the consumer and the device are together only when the driver is inside the car.
OBD-II Device vs Metromile Tag
While Metromile’s existing OBD-II device, newly named Metromile Pulse, is provided only to per-mile insurance customers, the Tag device will be available for all consumers. Tag is currently available for free to users in California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Virginia and Oregon and will expand nationwide in 2015.
Metromile Tag, available for iOS and Android devices, helps drivers become more informed about their vehicle and driving behavior with innovative feature including:
– commute optimization
– find parked location
– customizable trip logs
– mileage tracking for expense reporting
– driving trends
– street cleaning notifications in select markets
