If you love to scoure the internet for new recipes and the best restaurants, like the ones found in Maxim Gorin posts, you are no doubt a foodie to the core. There are so many delicious foods on this planet that it would be impossible to try them all. Being a food lover is a constant adventure because you never know when you are going to stumble upon a wonderful new dish that you’ve never heard of before.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to travel to different countries, you will come across foods that have been prepared the same way for centuries, but they never get talked about in the United States. There are some dishes that are only served in a small geographic region and have never made their way outside of that area. These dishes are rarely given to outsiders, except on very rare occasions.
Here is a list of foods you’ve probably never tried before:
1. Sea vegetables
Sea vegetables are the more glamorous name for seaweed. The seaweed that you are able to buy is most likely grown on a special farm. This basically means that what you are eating is not really seaweed in the traditional sense. While sea vegetables can be on the expensive side because of the cost of procuring them, you can be rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Along with their great taste, they are also extremely nutritious. When you are eating this delicacy from the deep, you should also prepare some carrots and onions. They go great together.
2. Lamb’s heart
You will find lamb’s heart commonly served in many places in the Middle East. While people in America might not think the idea of eating an animal’s organ is very appetizing, the taste, not to mention the level of nutrition, are both outstanding. If you try to find it in the U.S., your best bet is to go to a farmers’ market. You might find a lamb vendor who can sell one to you. Don’t even bother looking in your local supermarket. It is not popular, so it will cost you next to nothing. Before you eat it, remove any of the veins that are still visible. Cooking it at 350 F for 30 minutes will do the trick. You can use pepper and salt to liven the taste.
3. Neck of a chicken or turkey
You are probably only used to eating the wing, thigh, leg or breast or a chicken or turkey. However, in many countries, they make use of the rest of these birds that Americans simply throw away. One of the most succulent parts is the neck. It is very inexpensive and can be cooked on your stove or in your oven very easily. In many ways, eating the neck is similar to eating the wing of these birds.
4. Seitan
This is a water dough and wheat flour that is washed for the purpose of eliminating all of the starch and isolating the gluten. It is then placed in a broth to be boiled. Vegans and vegetarians often use seitan as a source of protein and a substitute for meat. It has the best taste when you grind it up, but it can also be sliced. You will need to use seasoning on it because the flavor is not strong.
