The Health Benefits of Snugglish Baby Seats
Disclaimer: This article is sponsored by Totlings.
I know I’ve covered baby floor seats in the past and talked about which brands I like, but I’ve never really shared with you the benefits of a baby floor seat. After browsing through the Snugglish Baby Seat website, I learned quite a bit of useful information that I felt compelled to share with you.
Aside from the fact that baby floor seats are adorable, convenient and all the rage right now, they actually aid in preventing four major infant health issues: SIDS, GER, LER and Flat Head Syndrome. I’ve included information on all of these health issues for you.
Flat head Syndrome (Plagiocephaly):
Plagiocephaly also known as flat head syndrome is a condition characterized by an asymmetrical distortion (flattening of one side) of the skull.
Snugglish have been reported and tested to aid in preventing the development of flathead. This is achieved by flexibility of the micro-balls, which adjust to the baby’s body and skull form rather than forcing the body to adjust to the rigid surface of the crib or mattress.
These characteristics of the Snugglish will allow comfort for the baby and also prevents the formation of flat head.It is characterized by a flat spot on the back or one side of the head caused by remaining in a position that puts pressure on one part of the skull for too long.
Babies spend most of their time lying on their back and this will result in pressing of the head onto the mattress and therefore developing a flat spot on the skull.Starting in the early 1990s, parents were told to put their babies to sleep on their back to reduce the risk of SIDS. While this advice has saved thousands of babies’ lives, experts have noticed a fivefold increase in misshapen heads since then and more infants have been developing flat head as a result of spending a large amount of time on their backs on flat crib surfaces.
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER):
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs when stomach contents flow back up into the esophagus—the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. GER is also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation because the stomach’s digestive juices contain acid.
Infants with GER spit up liquid mostly made of saliva and stomach acids. GER is common in infants under 2 years of age. About half of all infants spit up, or regurgitate, many times a day in the first 3 months of life. Most healthy infants experience few to no symptoms and stop spitting up between the ages of 12 and 14 months. It is medically proven that the proper positioning of the babies head and body can drastically reduce GER and discomfort.
Snugglish have been specifically designed to aid in proper positioning of the head and the body, therefore reducing the occurrence of GER. This is achieved through the tear-shaped design of the seat, which allows for on-demand upward resting position. Simply re-adjust the micro-balls so that it gives the baby a more elevated posture. This elevation will prevent the upward movement of the stomach acid and aids in natural digestion of food and nutrients in small intestine.
LARYNGOMALACIA (LM):
Laryngomalacia is a natural softening of the tissues of the larynx (or voice box) above the vocal cords. This is the most common cause of noisy breathing in infancy. The laryngeal structure is malformed and floppy, causing the tissues to fall over the airway opening and partially block it. The exact cause of laryngomalacia is not known. Relaxation or a lack of muscle tone in the upper airway may be a factor.
In 90 percent of cases, laryngomalacia resolves without treatment by the time your child is 18 to 20 months old. However, babies are prone to Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which contributes to the severity of the symptoms in laryngomalacia, enabling the disease to advance.
Snugglish advance design and structure helps in prevention of GER, therefore reducing the severity of Laryngomalacia.
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome):
SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants 1 month to 1 year old, and claims the lives of about 2,500 each year in the United States. It remains unpredictable despite years of research. (babycenter)
As parents we can only take necessary precautionary steps to reduce the likelihood of risks, according to SIDS.org these are:
1. Don’t expose your baby to any smoke
2. Never fall asleep with your baby in your bed or in a chair or sofa
3. The baby should be placed in a crib with no cover, pillows, bumper pads or positioning devices
4. Always place your baby, day or night on his back to sleep.
Snugglish features a safety harness to lock your baby in on his back and correct positional displacements and accidental rolling.
