Learning games are somewhat hard to come by, nowadays. I’m talking learning games for toddlers that aren’t overstimulating and hard to understand. While old fashioned board games are always great for sitting together as a family and playing, there are many times that I need to get something done around the house or on the blog and I just need my daughter to stay occupied for a bit. The iPad tends to come in handy for these moments.
I’m all about letting my daughter play learning games on my iPad. Some of her favorite apps throughout the years have solely focused on the alphabet which is most likely why she was able to learn her letters and the sounds that each letter makes at such an early age. There’s also been a great Melissa and Doug alphabet puzzle that helped her along the way. What most of these apps and puzzles have in common are the fact that the alphabet is presented in just uppercase or just lowercase. Frankly, most of them are just in uppercase letters. Because of this, my daughter struggles with a few of the lowercase letters like l (she thinks it’s an uppercase i).
We just downloaded a great app called Tappy Alphabet from the iTunes store. This is a great alphabet game for toddlers because it not only let’s children explore the alphabet as uppercase letters but it gives them the lowercase letters, as well.
The Tappy Alphabet app comes equipped with 100+ vocabulary words that are familiar to children and easy to pronounce. Each word is easy to understand, as well. I can’t tell you how many times there has been a word on an app that we just can’t quite make out because the sound is muffled.
When you touch a letter, the app sounds out the letter and gives you a word that begins with that letter. You can push the letter multiple times and the app will give you a different word each time. We have experienced a little bit of a problem with a few of the letters, though. For example, when you tough the I, the J talks. When you touch the J, the I talks.
Aside from any complications we’ve had with the app, it’s a perfect simple app for my daughter and she loves plugging her headphones into the iPad and playing around with it. The colors are fun and engaging and the app, overall, is just a great learning app.
