If you’re like me, you can’t resist the most adorable pairs of sunglasses for kids from the dollar aisle at Target. It seems like every trip to Target we end up buying a new pair for my daughter. They’re only a dollar so I don’t have to worry if she scratches them because I can easily replace them. However, after reading some very informative articles over at RealKidsShades.com, I’m looking at sunglasses a lot differently.
Did you know that some toy sunglasses can actually do more harm than good?
The truth is, most of us mistake the tinted plastic lenses for protective eye wear. Yep, I’m guilty.
According to an article on the Real Kids Shades website, the tinted toy lenses can actually relax the pupils and cause them to dilate which lets more harmful radiation into our children’s eyes meaning that the toy sunglasses can be more harmful than wearing no sunglasses at all. They also talk about how not all sunglasses that have 100% UV protection labels are legitimate.
So, that being said, how are Real Kids Shades better?
Let’s check the Sunglass Safety and Protection Checklist
for Real Kids Shades:
Third-party verification of 100% UV-A/UV-B protection. Check!
Shatterproof and impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses. Check!
Wrap-around frames to protect from peripheral light. Check!
A comfortable fit – not too tight, not too loose. Check!
Transparent enough to see your child’s eyes. Check!
Tested to contain no lead, bisphenol A or phthalates. Check!
A strong warranty – high quality manufacturers stand behind their sunglasses with significant replacement guarantees. Check, Check!
We own two pairs of Real Kids Shades which are both absolutely adorable. The adjustable Velcro head wraps helps the sunglasses stay put while kids play away. We’ve actually tried other brands of kids sunglasses with head wraps and they are nowhere near the quality of the Real Kids Shades straps.
I have to tell you, my daughter wanted nothing to do with her Real Kids Shades at first. I actually struggled and struggled to get pictures of her in her sunglasses for this review… until she saw one of her little friends put a pair on. Once she saw them on another kid she was all for them. Phew! I’m so relieved, let me tell you.
With the beach vacations we have planned this year, I’m really going to enforce the sunglass wearin’ on the whole family. Since eyes cannot repair themselves like skin, it’s crucial to wear quality protective eye wear early on to prevent cumulative damage.
Some of the eye disorders caused by sun damage are:
- Cataracts
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Pterygia – abnormal tissue grown on the whites of the eyes
- Skin cancer around the eyes
- Photokeratitis – sunburn of the cornea

The Xtreme Element ($19.99) sunglasses (above) look so sophisticated on our little one. They’re designed for boys and girls ages 0-36 months, or 3-7 years, so if you buy them early enough, they’ll last quite a while.

The ‘My First Shades‘ Collection offers a variety of sizes and styles for boys and girls. My daughter just loves her Pink Daisy sunglasses ($14.99). They’re super girly and trendy.
