November is one of the most depressing months of the year. We have to wait until midwinter for the nights to start getting lighter again, and Christmas still seems like a long way away. It’s only natural that our minds start drifting to winter sun possibilities, and adventures we could go on in warmer climates. If you’d like to book a trip to escape the cooler weather, look no further – here are some top ideas for you to explore.
Sri Lanka
An island country in South Asia, Sri Lanka boasts no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, ranging from the ancient castle Sigiriya, regarded by many as the eighth wonder of the world, to the Dambulla cave temple and the biosphere reserve and national park Sinharaja Forest, which translates as the Lion Kingdom and is home to a number of endemic species. Sri Lanka is a treasure trove for any adventurous tourist – go to Minneriya to watch hundreds of elephants before exploring the incredible white sand beaches. Sri Lanka is affordable and because it’s a relatively small island, the distances between different locations are easy to navigate. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world and absolutely worth a visit.
Cancún
Located in the southeast of Mexico on the Caribbean sea, if you’d like to spend some of your winter partying, Cancún is the place to be. Dust off your heels and summer party dresses as you explore the glittering hotel district with its clubs and excellent restaurants, or head downtown to a salsa club to dance the night away. If your head’s a little sore the next day, slip on one of your sexy bikinis so you can head to one of Cancún’s white sand beaches and doze your hangover away in the sun. If you want to add a little culture to your trip, you could explore Mayan archaeological site Las Ruinas del Rey, or even take a day trip up to the national park Isla Contoy.
The Bahamas
Consisting of more than 700 islands, cays and islets, the Bahamas are located southeast of Florida and are a traditional and luxurious winter sun experience. Take in the glorious clear seas and abundant marine life of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park on the Exuma Island, a marine protected area popular with divers, or Andros Island, which has the third largest barrier reef in the world. Whether you want to explore nature, take countless boat trips, or spend your days relaxing in the sun, the Bahamas will have something for you.
Jamaica
If you want to let your hair down and relax, head to Caribbean island Jamaica. Jamaica has everything, from the bustling, vibrant city of Kingston to glorious sandy beaches where you can relax during the day. Jamaican culture is famous worldwide for Bob Marley, the most celebrated reggae musician of all time, but you can also experience incredible food like jerk chicken and tropical fruit followed by a shot of rum, along with fantastic dance parties that last into the early hours. With crystal clear waters and a rocky coastline along with mountains and banana groves, Jamaica is a wonderful world away from ours and worthy of a winter sun visit.
